Welcome from our Chapter President

Valerie Eaton

Hello and welcome to the largest, oldest, baddest, boldest, most loved, most hated, most feared and revered, the most cussed and discussed civil rights organization in America.

Not only do we proclaim such a magnificent organization but the Peekskill NAACP branch is the most dynamic branch that you can join in the upper Westchester area.  We have done and continue to do the work in our community that would make our founders proud.  The work we do is volunteer but in the spirit of paid excellence.  We know that eliminating racial hatred and injustice is still needed and we continue to provide information to our community so that they are armed with what it takes to make generational and systemic racism a thing of yesteryear and not present day deja vu!

Volunteer work is not work when you want but work when others are in need and it's always needed until we can say that we ALL have the same opportunities and resources.  Our mission and vision statement explains it all.  The NAACP was created in 1909 by an interracial group consisting of W.E.B. Du Bois, Ida Bell Wells-Barnett, Mary White Ovington, and others concerned with the challenges facing African Americans, especially in the wake of the 1908 Springfield (Illinois) Race Riot.  Today, we face the same issues and remnants in the form of unequal job opportunities, limited access to health services, unfair policing and more.  To think that one cannot enjoy their God given right to lead a happy and productive lifestyle simply because of the color of their skin, their gender or their sexual preference is absurd.

In (former) President Barak Obama's 2008 speech on race, he solidifies our 2020 creed.  He states, "...I believe deeply that we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together - unless we perfect our union by understanding that we may have different stories, but we hold common hopes; that we may not look the same and we may not have come from the same place, but we all want to move in the same direction - towards a better future for of children and our grandchildren."

Together We Can Make Effective Change is our Creed for 2020 and presented at our 2019 Gala which, to our delight, brought so much of our community together with the excitement of what tomorrow might bring.

Come join us and let's make the effective change we want for generations to come!

Peace and blessings,

Valerie Eaton
